Derek L. Collins, DAHC
6/28/43 - 6/27/15
A man of integrity, a loyal friend, a respected leader in the industry and a continuing inspiration to those he left behind.
Derek's lifelong career in the commercial hardware industry began at age 20, working for a distributor and later as a salesman in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. In 1979, he moved his family to Arlington Texas and established DL Collins Associates, Inc., an independent sales agency representing manufacturers of commercial building products. Derek was involved in DHI (The Door and Hardware Institute), earning his AHC certification. He played an active role in the local DHI Texas Chapter and later went on to be a door hardware instructor. For fifteen years, he taught and mentored students to acquire their certification as well. He was later given the honorary title of DAHC (Distinguished Architectural Hardware Consultant) in recognition of his years of service to the industry.
Everyone knew "Uncle Derek". He was engaging, humorous and the life of the party - a great storyteller. If you met him once, you would not forget the experience. His life was so full and his generosity stretched out to receive so many.
Derek always came away with the order. He knew his customers well and was a superior salesman without hype or pressure. He had an uncanny ability to accurately analyze any business situation and bring forth solutions that would benefit all parties.
He was a one-of-a-kind individual and a true people person. We will miss him.
Derek's favorite charity was St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He enjoyed sponsoring children, especially around the holidays. If you wish to make a donation in his honor, you may do so from our website.
